Around 7:50am, I got a phone call from a customer (someone not local who was ordering these Pirate Cupcake Toppers to be shipped). I was a little shocked at the early morning call, but no biggie… we just had a couple of details that needed finalizing.
Since Richy was still sleeping, I decided to stay in bed a little while longer. And what that actually means is I fell back asleep and woke up around 9:15 with him. We took our time getting up and around and then got the kids started on their schoolwork.
Around 11am, we (he and I) decided to go into town to get an inspection sticker on his car. We also stopped by the post office because I needed some flat rate boxes and then we came right on back home so he could start getting ready for work.
During that window of time between getting home and him leaving for work, we ate lunch and I checked some homeschool assignments while the kids continued to work on other things. I also wrote out my (massive) baking list for the week.
I might have gotten a little crazy writing it out today… the left side is everything I have to bake/make; the left side is the descriptive side with the day each thing is due. Do you see that I have orders due Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week? Shoot.Me.Now. :-p
At 1:15, I left to take Christian to speech therapy and Richy was just about to leave for work. It was a beautiful, beautiful blue-sky day (even through my dirty windshield).
Since speech is only 30 minutes long, I ran to the grocery store (about 1/4 of a mile away) and grabbed a few things, then came right back and just checked email on my phone while I waited.
The kids called while I waited and asked if I could get some “dark bread & split pea soup” so they could eat like Medieval Monks (we’re studying Medieval times right now and it was a suggestion in their curriculum this week) for supper tonight.
Soooo… after I picked up Christian, I stopped by the store again and then we went to the Dollar Store for a few more things (it’s farther away from the school, but many things are cheaper there) and then we came home!
When I got back home, the kids were still working on school so I started the split pea soup in the crock pot. I used Katie’s recipe here – except I didn’t have the ham, so I used some chopped up turkey lunchmeat. I don’t hate many foods, but I absolutely HATE green peas, so I figure I probably couldn’t really mess up something that’s probably going to be gross anyway, by substituting turkey for ham (sorry Katie!).
I was really hoping my kids would love it, because I didn’t have a “Plan B’ for supper! Haha!
So – the rest of the afternoon is sort of a blur. I did lots of work on my blog/computer/banking, including posting that great deal on scarves here and a deal on Rose Bakes. Around 7:30 we all sat down at the table for supper. It was … um…to mixed reviews.
The pic above is Joshua’s face when he first saw the soup… very skeptical. (Does anyone else have a teenager who wears a hoodie and stocking cap in the house? He swears I freeze him to death so he wears it all.the.time).
As for the soup, most of the kids said it was “okay” and “not too bad”… Noah was pretty sure he was going to throw up if he had to eat it (he is one of my more dramatic kids). They were supposed to eat like monks… in silence. That didn’t happen! I tried one bite and it was almost as bad as I imagined. I could have forced it down if I were starving but I wasn’t that hungry tonight… haha!
After supper, I had the kids work on cleaning up the table & kitchen and I did more computer stuff. I feel like I spent my whole day right here, on this computer… not really finishing anything but working non-stop. That’s a sucky feeling.
OH – but Joshua and Caleb got a few things done. Caleb made a cake for Asher while Asher was in the bath. He’s been asking for a tractor cake for weeks and since I had a little extra cake from the weekend – Caleb decorated it for him. That is one HAPPY little brother right there!
Joshua worked on the order of cupcake toppers. I took the order last minute (it’s the one the lady called about this morning to finalize) with the understanding that it was his job and he would earn most of the profit. He’s been itching to earn money but there aren’t many places for a teen to work in our small town, so I have been giving him some jobs that he can do for me.
When I got a request for 6 dozen pirate face cupcake toppers – I knew he could do them and earn a good amount of money, so I asked him and he was up for the challenge. The biggest part of that challenge being that he had less than 48 hours to make them and get them shipped out so they’d arrive in time for the party, including drying time.
Unfortunately, it’s after 1am and he’s still working on them. He and I both underestimated how long it would take him to make them. Sarah helped for awhile, but I sent her to bed much earlier with the other kids. Joshua often stays up late in his bed reading but he’s almost never up this late working. We’ll have to re-think this for next time!
Anywho – I was just here all evening. At some point Asher crawled up next to me on the couch and fell asleep with his arm around me… precious!! It’s hard to type one-handed but I hated to move him. I know the snuggle days are gone in a blink so I let him stay for over an hour.
Around 11:15 one of my dearest friends Shelly called. She’s going through a hard time and needed to talk/laugh, so we laughed til we cried for over an hour on the phone. I was still laughing with her when Richy got home at 12:15. It’s nearly an hour later now and I’m just now finishing up this post and getting ready to go to bed.
As you can see up top, this week is going to be a BUSY one… so I’m wrapping this up! Night, night!
