For the 500 Things Decluttering Challenge, yesterdays’ assignment was to clear 50 things out of our kitchen drawers. (I mentioned in my last post that now we’ll be a day behind… and still a day ahead of Money Saving Mom since she skipped the weekend.)
So in my kitchen, we have one “junk” drawer, several utensils/gadgets drawers, and one “recipe” drawer. Most of my decluttering came from the recipe drawer and the junk drawer.
I am a recipe and cooking magazine junkie. I hate to throw out a magazine full of beautiful recipes, but Kathi was right – I don’t need these. Some of these were 10+ years old and I couldn’t tell you the last time I actually looked through them for a recipe. So I went through and grabbed (almost) all of the cooking magazines.
Then I hit up the junk drawer and threw away probably 20 random things that had found a home in there. I also remembered a hand mixer that is on it’s last leg. I already have a new hand mixer that I use regularly, but I kept that old one for “just in case”… how crazy is that?!
Well, honestly, not that crazy considering the amount of baking I do, but I also have a Bosch Mixer and a Kitchenaid… I really can’t foresee the kind of emergency that would require all of those PLUS the backup, mostly broken hand mixer. Right? Yeah, I’m crazy.
You know what keeps stunning me about this challenge? If I can go into my kitchen and get rid of 58 things in less than 10 minutes… I wonder how much I would really get rid of if I committed to it and had the time to go through each room with a fine tooth comb.
One thing she’s said over and over again in the Kickstart to Clutter Free Course is “clutter is anything you don’t love, don’t use, or wouldn’t buy again.” Gosh – that’s so, so true.
And when I was reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing last summer, insists that you get rid of anything that doesn’t “spark joy”.
Combining those two principles… I really hope 2016 will finally be the year I conquer my messy, cluttered house for good!
