Gosh, it’s just a little before midnight and I bet you thought I forgot about the 500 Things Decluttering Challenge, huh? But I didn’t! I’m running a little late tonight after a very long day, but I was dead-set on not dropping the ball on this challenge, so I’m back!!
Today’s challenge was to declutter 25 things from this category: Kid’s Stuff, Sports Equipment, Hobby/Art. Since my kids were already in bed when I finally got around to my to-do list for today, I skipped “kids stuff”. Also, my kids don’t play any organized sports and the few things we have, they use (soccer ball, kick ball, tennis rackets, etc.) so I skipped that too.
What was left? Hobby/Art. That translated to cake for me. Oy! Get rid of 25 cake things?? That sounded awfully painful!
Truth be told, I should probably get rid of 10x that much stuff from my cake supplies, but since it was getting late in the evening, I decided to tackle this head-on and do what I could in a short time. And guess what? In a matter of 15 minutes, I had 35 things!
First I went to our utility room where I store cake pans (and our extra frig). In there I got rid of several cake pans I never use (those silicone ones) and a couple of old shelves out of the frig. Since I use it primarily for cake, we took some of the shelves out and they’ve been out for 3 years. I think I can safely say I won’t be putting them back. Oh and a terrible old cookie sheet and that cupcake storage thing.
Kathi says it’s clutter if you don’t use it, don’t love it, and wouldn’t buy it again. I’m really struggling with whether or not to keep the cupcake thing, but gosh… using it twice in 3 years is sad.
Then I ran out to my cake shed just outside my back door. (this ^^^ is what it looks like when it’s clean). In there I grabbed an old cake tool box that is too small for my massive collection, a cupcake stand I haven’t used in at least 5 years, and a big turkey platter that I’ve never really liked. Okay, that’s not a “cake” thing, but it was in my shed on my props shelf.
When I still didn’t have a total of 25 things, I came back into the house and opened up one of our closets that I’ve hijacked for cake supplies. This is where I hit the decluttering jackpot. I have almost 2 full shelves of cookbooks, cake books, cookie books, etc. I easily cleared out 20 books, magazines, etc. Some of these were more painful than others, but really… I never use these things so they need to go!
And boom – I had 35 things! YAY! Okay, see you again tomorrow!
