On a whim (because that’s how I do so much of my life), I decided to join Money Saving Mom’s 500 Things Decluttering Challenge today… a day late, of course, but better late, than never, right?
I actually intended to join on time when I read about it a couple of days ago, but then I forgot about it until this evening when I saw it in my inbox again. So here we go.
This might turn into the most embarrassing series ever. Why? Because junk. And clutter. And how much of it we have.
The Day 1 Challenge was to declutter at least of 100 pieces of paper. I’m pretty sure I could easily get rid of one million pieces of paper, but sure – I could easily do 100. It took about 5 minutes of taking things from the top of my desk and here’s my pile of at least 100…
I stopped counting and just grabbed the rest of a pile and threw it all in the fire just after snapping this pic:
We’re loving it that it’s finally cold enough in Mississippi to have our fire going!
Day 2 Challenge was to declutter 25 things from my bedroom. Again – easy peasy. Sadly, and I’m ashamed to admit it, our whole house desperately needs decluttering in a big, BIG way so it’s not hard to find lots to get rid of.
I struggle more with finding the time and motivation to go through a million things and actually do the work, ya know?!
I took a box and went to my bedroom and immediately filled the box with 30+ things: shoes, jewelry, clothes, perfume/lotions, purses, a book, a scarf & more. Most of this came out of my closet, jewelry box, and off my dresser. I also threw away at least as many things as I put into the giveaway box and didn’t even count those. :-/
OOoh, and I found a box under my bed full of old nail polish & tiny hotel lotions and soaps and other odd, random junk. Why was it there? I have no idea. I told Sarah she could go through it and see if any of the polish was still usable – otherwise, that’s all going in the trash too.
It took about 15 minutes to gather that up – imagine if I had all day to really go through it all?!
I’m going to round my numbers to how much I know I got rid of – not exact numbers since I didn’t count every single thing.
Day 1: 100 things
Day 2: 30 things
Total so far: 130 things.
Okay – here’s to hoping I can stick with this challenge for 12 more days!
