I had a plan this week. My plan involved pampering my husband on his birthday, knocking out a couple of long-overdue doctor appointments for the kids, and most importantly, very little cake decorating and lots of relaxing.
Well, my plans didn’t exactly work out. Monday and Tuesday were pretty good, but things quickly went wacky on Wednesday and all the following days! Those days followed with extra cakes and cupcakes, broken bones and overall exhaustion.
**Warning – there is a disturbing picture of his broken arm farther down in this post… don’t say I didn’t warn ya!**
Let me start from the beginning. Because it was my husband’s birthday this week, I had only taken one cake order and an order for some simple cupcake toppers and one wedding consultation on Saturday. I had hoped to really just focus on hanging out with my husband on his birthday and the weekend after.
Well.. that went out the window when he was scheduled to work a midnight shift for 7 straight days. So much for quality time with hubby.
When I realized he would be working nights and I got requests to do some cake tastings by a couple of other brides and another small cake order, I figured ‘why not?’
But when I do tastings, I end up with lots more cupcakes than I need… so that turned into me baking, frosting and delivery 14 dozen cupcakes on Wednesday. Okay – maybe that wasn’t my brightest idea?!
FOURTEEN dozen. Yeah. I wish I had a picture. But what I do have pictures of is my lunch dates that day. Asher had a check-up in the same town as a couple of the cupcake/cake orders and I was meeting a bride at a little deli for her consultation… so I took those two characters with me. That may be why she hasn’t called!? Ha!!
Let me disclose here that I absolutely love what I do – I’m passionate about it and 99% of the time, it doesn’t feel like work at all because I love it so much. But every now and then, it’s still nice to have an easy week. Ya know?
But I digress. Back to Wednesday… I did the cupcakes for the tastings (and all the others) and I did a additional small cake order for that day too (Go State!). Not my original order for the week – but one that I had taken sort of last minute after the whole schedule thing happened.
In addition to that, I also got Asher to his appointment, went shopping for a few things, and got home in time for church that night. Not a quiet day by any stretch of the imagination!!
Before I move on, on Wednesday I got a call asking about a cupcake order for Friday. Again, I figured… why not? It was a pretty easy order and I adore this particular customer and it really didn’t stress me at all.
And lastly on Wednesday (yes – that day seemed to never end!), a friend who owns a local bakery had gotten into a pinch with a cake order and thought she might need some help. Between Richy’s birthday and the orders I had, I wasn’t sure how it would work out, but I told her I’d help if I could.
Later that night she was sure she needed help so I told her I’d start on a topper for her that night and be there to help the next evening!
Sooo… moving on. Thursday was pretty uneventful during the day. I worked on finishing up the cupcake toppers, made my baking list for my cake and remaining cupcake orders (and one more bridal consultation/tasting) and started working on those, and then got ready to go meet my friend at her bakery to help out with a cake.
All was going well with her cake until my son Caleb called and told me I needed to go to the hospital – that “Daddy is taking Christian to the ER… his arm is broken really bad!”
I knew it would take my husband about 10 minutes to get Christian to the local emergency room and I was only a couple of minutes away, so I suddenly kicked it into overdrive to try and finish up the cake I was working on and meet him at the hospital.
When I got there…. there are no words. I’ve never seen an arm bent or shaped the way his was. He had nearly a 90° bend between his elbow and wrist. Did you catch that… between?? I nearly fainted. If you don’t wanna see it – quickly skip the next photo…
They “flattened” it a little bit to do the x-ray… I’m telling you it was WAY worse than that. It was a full “L” shape dropping down just above his wrist. Both bones were broken and severely out of place. OWEEEEY!!!!
Even though it doesn’t look nearly as bad as it did in real life, the photo is still painful for me to look at! It was almost immediately determined that he needed to see an orthopedic surgeon so a temporary splint was put on, an appointment was made for 7 am yesterday (Friday) and we were sent home with pain meds.
He was in pretty good spirits that next morning and not in pain at all – we were SO grateful! God was definitely answering prayers!!
After his arm was set was another story. To make a long story short, the surgeon was able to get his arm set in a temporary cast (without actual surgery… Praise the Lord!) and if all goes well, he’ll get another x-ray and a permanent cast next Tuesday.
But when he came back from that procedure (they had put him to sleep so he didn’t feel it), he was groggy, crying, the anesthesia made him nauseous then sick, he was hungry, his arm hurt more, and he was generally cranky.
He was also told he had to lay on the couch and keep his arm above his heart for the next 4 days in that awkward bend … that did NOT make him happy.
But after we were home, he perked up a bit. He truly has to keep that arm above his heart at all times (doctors orders!), so he looks kind of funny sitting and walking around like that! 🙂
In the meantime, there was no rest for Mommy. I started back on the cupcake order that I had only gotten half done on Thursday, baked the cakes for my last cake order for Saturday, and managed to clean the kitchen and do a couple of loads of laundry.
And today… Saturday? I had my last bride consultation and a cake to finish for today. I must say – the bride and her family were a complete joy to meet! We visited for almost an hour and a half, we laughed, they ate cupcakes, we looked at pictures… and I was able to just breath a bit.
After that I came home and finished up this Minnie cake! So as I sit here tonight… I’m tired. Deep-in-my-bones tired. Exhausted really. And my dieting? Yeah, not so much. Yesterday and today were pretty rough (although my weight this morning was SHOCKINGLY 214.0 – my lowest yet!!!). But as promised, I’m not quitting. Tomorrow will be a new day!
Many of you prayed for Christian when I posted on Facebook and for that I’m incredibly thankful! He’s bored out of his mind having to sit all the time and rest, but overall, he’s doing beautifully!
